Recreation and country living 1890–1934
On the death of Thomas Chalmers in 1890, his eldest son, Thomas Cathcart, inherited the
estate. Like his father, farming held little interest for him, and he continued to lease
out the farmland.

Thomas Cathcart is most vividly remembered not as a farmer, but as a champion golfer who
played in the Australian Open. A keen sportsman, he also rowed and played tennis and
cricket.

As the century drew to a close, good farmland became scarce and criticism was directed at
absentee landlords. By 1911 the Crown was short of land to grant or sell and resumed
a portion of Woolmers under the Closer Settlement Scheme.
